What did first vending machines in America vend?

Being the 4th of July, you may be interested in a little vending / American trivia. According to About.com's vending machine history trivia the first in the USA were to dispense chewing gum. They were installed in the New York City train platforms in 1888! The gum was called Tutti-Frutti from inventor Thomas Adams. Both the gum and the first American vending machine were from the Thomas Adams Gum Company.
